Phone for 50,000, 60,000 or 70,000 FCFA: what to buy?

With less than 50,000 FCFA, only the iPhone 6 fits the budget. Up to 60,000 FCFA, you add the iPhone 7 and the Samsung Galaxy A06. Up to 70,000 FCFA, the Galaxy A07 joins the list. The iPhone 8 costs a little more while staying under 75,000 FCFA. Check the exact price of each model in the table above.

  • Under 50,000 FCFA: the iPhone 6, as a backup phone or a first smartphone.
  • Under 60,000 FCFA: the Samsung Galaxy A06, our pick for everyday use, or the iPhone 7 if you want 128GB on an iPhone.
  • Under 70,000 FCFA: the Samsung Galaxy A07, for a better selfie camera and a triple rear camera.
  • Under 75,000 FCFA: the iPhone 8, the most recent iPhone in this range.

Looking for a phone under 30,000 or 40,000 FCFA? We do not sell brand new smartphones at that price. Be wary of "brand new" offers far below these amounts: read our guide to buying a phone without getting scammed before you pay.

How to choose a budget phone

At a low price, four criteria make the difference: the software version, the storage, the battery and the screen size. Look at them in this order before you look at the brand.

  • The software version. A phone that is too old may no longer install or update some apps. That is why it is criterion number one: it decides whether the phone is still useful in two years.
  • Storage. 64GB is enough to start. Take 128GB if you film or take a lot of photos.
  • Battery. The Samsung Galaxy A06 and A07 have 5,000 mAh, enough for a busy day. The iPhones in this range are more compact, with a smaller battery.
  • Screen. The Samsungs have a 6.7-inch screen, comfortable for video. The iPhones have a 4.7-inch screen, easy to hold in one hand.

The 5 models, one by one

Samsung Galaxy A06: the best value

The Galaxy A06 is the most balanced: a large 6.7-inch 90 Hz screen, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 5,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 14.

Who is it for? Anyone who wants a simple, long-lasting phone: WhatsApp, calls, social media, photos. Good to know: it does not support 5G, only 4G.

Samsung Galaxy A07: the big screen with a better selfie

The Galaxy A07 uses the same base (Helio G85 chip, 4GB of RAM, 128GB, 5,000 mAh battery) with a 13 MP selfie camera and a triple rear sensor.

Who is it for? Selfie lovers and people who watch videos on a big screen. Good to know: its screen is 60 Hz, so a little less smooth than the A06, and it ships with Android 13.

iPhone 8: the most polished iPhone in this range

The iPhone 8 is the newest of the three iPhones in this guide. It has an A11 Bionic chip, a glass back that supports wireless charging, IP67 water resistance and a 12 MP camera with optical stabilisation. iOS 16 is available for this model.

Who is it for? People who want to enter the Apple world with a reliable model. Good to know: the screen is 4.7 inches and the battery lasts less than on the Samsungs.

iPhone 7: water resistant with plenty of storage

The iPhone 7 is the first water-resistant iPhone (IP67). This version offers 128GB of storage, a 12 MP camera that films in 4K and stereo speakers. iOS 15 is available.

Who is it for? Anyone who wants an iPhone with lots of room for photos and videos. Good to know: with 2GB of RAM and the A10 chip, it is slower than the iPhone 8.

iPhone 6: best kept as a backup phone

The iPhone 6 is the cheapest model in our Apple catalogue. It has a 4.7-inch screen, Touch ID and contactless payment, in a light 129 g body.

Who is it for? A first smartphone or a spare phone. Good to know: iOS 12 is the last compatible version. Some recent apps need newer software: before you buy, check that the ones you need (WhatsApp, for example) work on iOS 12. Our advisers can confirm it for you.

Which model for your use?

The right phone depends on what you do with it every day. This table sums up our advice.

Torn between a Samsung and an iPhone? Choose the Samsung if you want a big screen and a battery that lasts the day. Choose the iPhone 8 if you prefer a compact phone that is simple to use. Either way, keep some space free: back up your photos regularly.

What these phones will not do

At this price, you have to accept a few limits. Knowing them avoids disappointment.

  • No 5G. All five models run on 4G, which is more than enough for WhatsApp, calls and video.
  • Decent photos, not exceptional ones. In daylight, the results are good. At night, entry-level sensors capture less light and images are less sharp.
  • The most demanding games. Light games run very well. Recent 3D games run on low settings, or not at all on the iPhone 6.
  • Little spare storage. With 64GB, a video a day quickly fills the space. Regularly delete the videos you receive on WhatsApp.

These limits should not put you off: they are normal at this price, and a well-chosen phone remains very useful.

How to make your phone last

A budget phone lasts a long time if you protect it from day one. Three steps are enough.

  1. Use a case and a screen protector. They cost little and protect the screen from drops and scratches. Find them in our accessories.
  2. Use a good charger and a good cable. A poor-quality charger can damage the battery over time. Choose a charger suited to your model.
  3. Keep some free space. A full phone slows down. Delete useless files and the apps you no longer open.

Our advice before you buy

A low price should not mean a bad surprise. A few simple habits protect you.

  • Compare with a slightly higher budget. If you can spend more, take a look at our iPhones and our Samsung Galaxy phones: the difference in comfort is often big.
  • Ask your questions before paying. Torn between two models? Message us on WhatsApp, the answer comes fast.
  • Pay on delivery. You check the phone in front of the courier, then pay in cash, with MTN MoMo or with Orange Money: see how to buy a phone with Mobile Money.
  • Enjoy 24-hour delivery. It is free in Yaounde and Douala for orders from 50,000 FCFA.
  • Check the warranty and returns. The warranty lasts 12 months, and you have 7 days to return your phone.
