The iPhone 12 range: what really exists

Apple launched four iPhone 12 models in 2020: the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. They are the first 5G iPhones. There is no iPhone 12 Plus.

Many people search for "iPhone 12" without knowing which model to choose. Is the iPhone 12 worth buying in Cameroon today? This guide gives you the full map of the family, so you do not waste time or make a mistake.

Here are the four models, with the figures published by Apple:

All four have an OLED screen, 5G, a Lightning port with MagSafe charging, water and dust resistance (IP68) and a nano-SIM plus an eSIM. What does "plain iPhone 12" mean?

"Plain iPhone 12" refers to the standard model: the iPhone 12, without "Pro" or "mini".

It is not an official Apple name, but it is one of the most common ways people search for it. The "plain" iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch OLED screen, the A14 Bionic chip, a dual 12 MP camera and 5G. It weighs 164 g. Its full page is here: iPhone 12 128GB.

iPhone 12 Plus: it does not exist

Apple never released an iPhone 12 Plus. The large model in the range is called the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

If you see an "iPhone 12 Plus" for sale, that listing needs checking. For a big screen, choose the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with its 6.7-inch OLED screen and up to 20 hours of video. For a small screen, choose the iPhone 12 mini, with its 5.4-inch screen.

The iPhone 12 mini: the small 5G phone

The iPhone 12 mini is the smallest 5G iPhone in our catalogue: 5.4 inches and 135 g. The trade-off: the shortest battery life in the family, up to 15 hours of video.

Many customers look for it for one-handed use, or for a phone that fits in any pocket. It has the same A14 Bionic chip as the other iPhone 12 models and the same type of OLED screen. If you spend a lot of time on your phone, take the iPhone 12 instead, which is bigger and lasts a little longer. If size matters most, the iPhone 12 mini is still a very good choice.

MagSafe: what is it for?

MagSafe is a set of magnets on the back of the phone. It lets you attach a wireless charger or an accessory, and charge at up to 15W without a cable.

The four iPhone 12 models were the first to have it. According to Apple, MagSafe wireless charging reaches 15W with a compatible charger. You can also attach a case, a wallet or a magnetic mount. The iPhone 11 models do not have this magnet. If you already use MagSafe accessories, or plan to buy some, it is a good reason to choose an iPhone 12 over an iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 5G: useful or not?

All four iPhone 12 models have 5G. It only matters if your network offers it in your city. Otherwise, they work on 4G like any other iPhone.

The iPhone 12 was the first 5G iPhone. It is a good reason to prefer it to the iPhone 11 if you want a future-ready phone. But do not pay extra for 5G if it is not available around you: first ask your network (MTN, Orange or Camtel) whether it covers your area.

In 2026, is the iPhone 12 still a good buy?

Yes, if you want 5G and an OLED screen at a low price. No, if you want the newest model or long battery life.

The iPhone 12 models keep very good strengths: a fast chip, a nice OLED screen, 5G and MagSafe charging. What you give up compared with newer models:

• a USB-C port: all iPhone 12 models charge through a Lightning port;
• battery life: up to 15 to 20 hours of video depending on the model, vs 22 to 28 hours on the iPhone 13 Pro models;
• a 120 Hz screen: no iPhone 12 has one. It arrives with the iPhone 13 Pro models.
