iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: our answer

Take the iPhone 14 if photos and safety matter to you. Take the iPhone 13 if you want to pay less: the chip, the screen and 5G are exactly the same.

The iPhone 14 is the direct successor of the iPhone 13, but it looks a lot like its predecessor. It keeps the same A15 Bionic chip and the same 6.1-inch screen. The real changes are a brighter main lens, an improved selfie camera, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite. This iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14 guide compares the two standard models, the ones many customers call the "plain" iPhone 13 and the "plain" iPhone 14.

The four differences that matter

A brighter lens, a sharper selfie, safety features and one more graphics core: these are the only important differences between the two models.

1. A brighter main lens

The iPhone 14 has a main lens with an f/1.5 aperture, vs f/1.6 on the iPhone 13. The wider the aperture, the more light the lens captures: the difference is mostly visible in low light, in the evening or indoors. Apple also adds its Photonic Engine to the 14, which improves the processing of dimly lit photos. Both phones keep the same 12 MP resolution and sensor-shift stabilisation.

2. Selfies with autofocus

The iPhone 14's selfie camera focuses automatically (autofocus). The iPhone 13's does not. In practice, your selfies and video calls stay sharper when you move or hold the phone at arm's length.

3. Video: Action mode and Cinematic mode

The iPhone 14 adds Action mode, which strongly stabilises video when you walk or run (up to 2.8K at 60 frames per second according to Apple). Its Cinematic mode goes up to 4K HDR at 30 frames per second. If you often film on the move, it is a real advantage.

4. Safety: Crash Detection and SOS via satellite

The iPhone 14 detects a severe car crash and can alert emergency services, where automatic emergency calls are supported. It also offers Emergency SOS via satellite, which lets you contact emergency services without mobile coverage. Note: these services depend on the country. Check on Apple's website whether Cameroon is covered before making it a buying criterion.

What does not change

The screen, the chip, 5G, charging and water resistance are identical: do not count them in your choice.

Both iPhones have a 6.1-inch OLED screen, the A15 Bionic chip, 5G and MagSafe charging up to 15W. Both charge through a Lightning port and are water resistant down to 6 metres (IP68). The weight is almost the same: 174 g for the 13 and 172 g for the 14. Neither has a 120 Hz screen, the Dynamic Island or Apple Intelligence.

Is the price gap worth it?

If low-light photos, selfies or video on the move matter to you, yes. Otherwise, the iPhone 13 saves you money without losing the essentials.

Here are the two models, with their prices read from our catalogue:

And the full table, with the Pro models of each generation:

iPhone 14 Pro Max320,000 FCFA128GB2022

And the Pro Max models: iPhone 13 Pro Max or iPhone 14 Pro Max?

The 14 Pro Max is a real jump: Dynamic Island, A16 Bionic chip and a 48 MP main camera. The 13 Pro Max remains a very good big screen, at a lower price.

Both have a 6.7-inch screen with ProMotion up to 120 Hz and weigh 240 g. The 14 Pro Max moves to the A16 Bionic chip, the Dynamic Island and a 48 MP main camera, and announces up to 29 hours of video, vs 28 hours for the 13 Pro Max. Both are offered in 128GB in our catalogue, so the comparison at the same capacity is direct.

Three mistakes to avoid when comparing

Always compare at the same capacity, with the same seller and with a brand-new, sealed phone.

  • Comparing two different storage sizes. In our catalogue, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are both offered in 256GB, but always check the capacity before concluding that one is "cheaper" than the other.
  • Choosing on price alone. A very low price on an iPhone 13 or 14 should alert you: ask for the IMEI number, the warranty and a receipt. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the warning signs.
  • Confusing the 13 and 14 in a listing. The two look very alike, down to their dimensions. Check the exact model name, its capacity and its IMEI number before you pay.

Before you buy: three checks

For a phone of this value, check three points: the phone is brand new, its IMEI is clean and the warranty is clear.

  1. Brand new and sealed. A genuine new iPhone arrives in a sealed box.
  2. Clean IMEI. Our guide on checking the IMEI shows how to do it in a few minutes.
  3. Clear warranty. Find our terms on the warranty and returns page and the delivery page.

You then order on WhatsApp, without creating an account. Your adviser replies in under 5 minutes and confirms the colour, the storage and payment by Orange Money or MTN MoMo.
