iPhone 14 vs iPhone 15: our answer

Take the iPhone 15 if photos and USB-C matter to you. Take the iPhone 14 if you want to pay less: both have the same screen, the same announced battery life and the same weight.

The iPhone 15 is the direct successor of the iPhone 14. It brings four real changes: a 48 MP main camera, a newer chip, the Dynamic Island and a USB-C port. Almost everything else is identical. This iPhone 14 vs iPhone 15 guide compares the two standard models, the ones many customers call the "plain" iPhone 14 and the "plain" iPhone 15.

The four differences that matter

Camera, chip, Dynamic Island and USB-C: these are the only important differences between the two models.

1. The camera: 48 MP vs 12 MP

The iPhone 15 shoots with a 48 MP main sensor, vs 12 MP on the iPhone 14. In practice, photos are more detailed, especially when you crop or zoom. If you take a lot of photos of family, products or documents, it is the best reason to choose the 15.

2. The port: USB-C vs Lightning

The iPhone 15 charges through a USB-C port, the same as many Android phones, tablets and recent computers. One cable is enough for several devices. The iPhone 14 keeps the Lightning port, specific to Apple: you need a dedicated cable.

3. The Dynamic Island

The iPhone 15 replaces the notch with the Dynamic Island, an area that shows notifications, calls and the music playing. It is more modern and more practical every day. It is not essential to use the phone.

4. The chip: A16 Bionic vs A15 Bionic

The A16 Bionic is newer than the A15 Bionic. For everyday use (social media, video calls, photos), the difference is barely visible. It matters mostly if you keep your phone for a long time: a newer chip ages better.

What does not change

The screen, the announced battery life and the weight are practically identical: do not count them in your choice.

Both iPhones have a 6.1-inch OLED screen. Apple announces up to 20 hours of video playback for both. The weight is almost the same: 172 g for the 14 and 171 g for the 15. Both are water and dust resistant (IP68), support 5G and have a 12 MP selfie camera.

Neither has Apple Intelligence. Apple keeps it for the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 and later (see Apple's page). If that is your criterion, neither is right for you: look at the iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16.

Is the price gap worth it?

If photos or USB-C matter to you, yes. Otherwise, the iPhone 14 saves you money without losing the essentials.

Here are the two models, with their prices read from our catalogue:

And the full table, with the Pro Max models of each generation:

iPhone 15340,000 FCFA256GB2023
iPhone 15 Pro Max440,000 FCFA256GB2023

And the Pro Max models: iPhone 14 Pro Max or iPhone 15 Pro Max?

The 15 Pro Max is lighter, more powerful, made of titanium and uses USB-C. The 14 Pro Max remains a very good big screen, at a lower price.

Both have a 6.7-inch screen with ProMotion up to 120 Hz and announce up to 29 hours of video. The 15 Pro Max moves to the A17 Pro chip, a titanium frame, a 5x telephoto and a USB-C port. It weighs 221 g vs 240 g for the 14 Pro Max, which keeps the Lightning port and the A16 Bionic chip.

Watch the storage: in our catalogue, the 14 Pro Max is offered in 128GB, and the 15 Pro Max in 256GB. Compare prices at the same capacity with your adviser. For the full families, read our guides iPhone 14 in Cameroon and iPhone 15 in Cameroon.

SIM or eSIM: check before you buy

Apple's US page states that the iPhone 14 and 15 work with eSIM only. The version you receive may vary depending on its country of origin. Ask your adviser which version is delivered, then check with your network (MTN, Orange or Camtel) that eSIM is available if needed.

Three mistakes to avoid when comparing

Always compare at the same capacity, with the same seller and with a brand-new, sealed phone.

  • Comparing two different storage sizes. A 128GB iPhone and a 256GB iPhone do not cost the same. Check the capacity before concluding that one is "cheaper" than the other.
  • Choosing on price alone. A very low price on an iPhone 14 or 15 should alert you: ask for the IMEI number, the warranty and a receipt. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the warning signs.
  • Buying an iPhone 14 thinking it has USB-C. Many sellers mix up the two generations. Look at the port: the iPhone 14 has Lightning, the iPhone 15 has USB-C.

Before you buy: three checks

For a phone of this value, check three points: the phone is brand new, its IMEI is clean and the warranty is clear.

  1. Brand new and sealed. A genuine new iPhone arrives in a sealed box. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the points to check.
  2. Clean IMEI. Our guide on checking the IMEI shows how to do it in a few minutes.
  3. Clear warranty. Find our terms on the warranty and returns page and the delivery page.

You then order on WhatsApp, without creating an account. Your adviser replies in under 5 minutes and confirms the colour, the storage and payment by Orange Money or MTN MoMo. To see the whole range, browse our iPhone catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest difference between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 15?

The camera and charging. The iPhone 15 has a 48 MP main camera vs 12 MP on the iPhone 14, and a USB-C port instead of Lightning. It also has the Dynamic Island and a newer chip, the A16 Bionic.

Is the iPhone 14 still worth it against the iPhone 15?

Yes, if you want to pay less and photos are not your priority. The screen, the announced battery life and the weight are almost identical. You give up USB-C, the Dynamic Island and the 48 MP sensor.

Does the iPhone 14 or the iPhone 15 have Apple Intelligence?

Neither. Apple keeps Apple Intelligence for the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 and later. If that is your criterion, choose an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16.

Which cable do the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 need?

The iPhone 14 charges with a Lightning cable. The iPhone 15 charges with a USB-C cable, the same as many Android phones and recent computers. If all your cables are USB-C, the iPhone 15 is more practical.
