Price and availability

Both models are in stock. The iPhone 17 costs more: the exact gap is shown in the table below, read directly from our catalogue, so it is always up to date.

For storage, the iPhone 17 starts at 256GB and also comes in 512GB. The iPhone 16 is offered with us in 256GB, and Apple also sells it in 128GB and 512GB. If you film a lot, 256GB is a good start for both.

Screen: 120 Hz vs 60 Hz

This is the most visible difference every day. The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch 120 Hz OLED screen. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch 60 Hz OLED screen. Scrolling, games and videos look smoother on the 17.

The number of hertz shows how many times the image refreshes each second. At 120 Hz, movements are softer: when you scroll through WhatsApp, Facebook or a web page, the text stays sharp and the animation feels more natural.

At 60 Hz, the iPhone 16's screen is still of very good quality. It is bright, precise and readable in full sun: Apple announces up to 2,000 nits outdoors. Many users never have a problem with a 60 Hz screen. But if you test the two side by side, you can see the difference.

Chip and performance

The iPhone 17 has the A19 chip and the iPhone 16 the A18 chip. For WhatsApp, social media, photos and most games, both are very fast.

You will not feel any lag on the iPhone 16 in normal use. The newer chip mainly gives you an advantage over time. It can help the phone stay smooth for longer.

One important point: Apple does not publish a precise period of updates for an iPhone. So we cannot promise how many years of updates each model will get. The newer of the two simply has a better chance of staying up to date for longer.

Photo and video

• Group or landscape photos: the 17's 48 MP ultra wide gives more detail than the 16's 12 MP one.

Battery life and weight

Apple announces up to 30 hours of video playback for the iPhone 17, vs 22 hours for the iPhone 16. The 17 weighs 177 g and the 16 weighs 170 g.

These durations are the maximums announced by Apple for video playback. In real use, with social media, 4G and 5G, you will get less. But the gap between the two models is real: the iPhone 17 lasts longer.

The weight difference is very small. Both are light and slip easily into a pocket.
