Is the Google Pixel 8 worth buying in Cameroon? Pixel 8, 8 Pro or 8a

The Pixel 8 range: what really exists

Google launched three Pixel 8 models: the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on 12 October 2023, then the Pixel 8a on 14 May 2024. They are the first Pixels with 7 years of announced updates.

Many people search for "Pixel 8" without knowing which model to choose. Is the Google Pixel 8 worth buying in Cameroon today? Here is the family's spec sheet, with the figures published by Google and spec sheets:

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are water and dust resistant (IP68), the Pixel 8a slightly less (IP67). The Pixel 8 Pro has a triple camera with a 48 MP 5x telephoto and a 10.5 MP selfie camera; the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a have a dual camera, with a 50 MP (Pixel 8) or 64 MP (Pixel 8a) main sensor. You can check everything in the "Our sources" section at the bottom of the page.

Pixel 8 Pro XL: it does not exist

There is no "Pixel 8 Pro XL". The large model of this generation is called the Pixel 8 Pro, with a 6.7-inch screen.

This search comes up regularly. The Pixel 8 Pro is the model that matches what you are looking for: Google Pixel 8 Pro 256GB. The first Pixel called "XL" in the current series is the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Release date: when did the Pixel 8 come out?

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were unveiled on 4 October 2023 and put on sale on 12 October 2023. The Pixel 8a was unveiled on 7 May 2024 and put on sale on 14 May 2024.

Today, in September 2026, the Pixel 8 models are three years old. They are no longer the newest: Google launched the Pixel 9 in 2024, the Pixel 10 in 2025 and the Pixel 11 in August 2026. That is good news for your budget: a Pixel that is no longer the newest costs less, while still being very well supported.

7 years of updates: until when?

The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are supported until about October 2030, the Pixel 8a until about May 2031.

On the official page of its update policy, Google states that the Pixel 8 and later receive 7 years of system and security updates, counted from release on the US Google Store. That is two years more than the Pixel 6 and 7 (5 years).

Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro: what is the difference?

The Pixel 8 Pro has a bigger screen, more memory, a bigger battery and a 5x telephoto. The Pixel 8 is more compact and cheaper.

Pixel 8 or Pixel 8a: which one?

The Pixel 8a has the same 120 Hz screen and the same chip as the Pixel 8, for less. It has a slightly smaller battery, slower charging and less water resistance.

The Pixel 8a has a 6.1-inch 120 Hz screen, the Tensor G3 chip, 8GB of RAM, a 4,492 mAh battery, 18W wired charging and a 64 MP main sensor. It weighs 188 g. It is the right choice if your budget is tight: you keep the 7 years of updates and the smooth screen.

Which Pixel 8 for your needs?

Your budget, the screen size and how much you use the camera decide. Here is a quick guide.

In 2026, is a Pixel 8 still a good buy?

Yes: it offers one of the best balances of lifespan and price. You keep 7 years of updates, a 120 Hz screen and good photos, without paying for a recent model.

What you give up against later generations: the newer chip (Tensor G4, then G5, then G6) and the latest camera features. To compare, read our guide Pixel 9 in Cameroon or our guide on the Pixel 6 and its end of support.

Before you buy: three checks

For a phone of this value, check three points: the phone is brand new, its IMEI is clean and the warranty is clear.

1. Brand new and sealed. A genuine new Pixel arrives in a sealed box. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the points to check.
2. Clean IMEI. Our guide on checking the IMEI shows how to do it in a few minutes.
3. Clear warranty. Find our terms on the warranty and returns page and the delivery page.

You then order on WhatsApp, without creating an account. Your adviser replies in under 5 minutes and confirms the colour, the storage and payment by Orange Money or MTN MoMo.
