Google Pixel 6a

The Pixel 6 range: what really exists

Google launched three Pixel 6 models: the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on 28 October 2021, then the Pixel 6a on 21 July 2022. There is no "Pixel 6 Pro XL".

Many people search for "Pixel 6" without knowing which model to choose. Is the Google Pixel 6 worth buying in Cameroon today? This guide gives you the full map of the family and, above all, tells you until when each model is updated, which is decisive for a phone of this age.

Pixel 6a6.1-inch OLED6GB4,410 mAh178 g21 July 2022

All three have the first Google Tensor chip, 5G and a dual or triple camera. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are water and dust resistant (IP68), the Pixel 6a slightly less (IP67). The Pixel 6 Pro adds a 48 MP 4x periscope telephoto and a bigger, smoother screen. You can check everything in the "Our sources" section at the bottom of the page.

The right reflex

When a seller offers you a Pixel, ask for the exact model name, the storage and the IMEI number. The only names in this family are Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6a. Any other name, such as "Pixel 6 Pro XL", should alert you.

Until when are Pixel 6 models updated?

Google promises 5 years of updates from launch. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro therefore reach the end of support in about October 2026. The Pixel 6a is supported until about July 2027.

On the official page of its update policy, Google states that the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro and 7a receive "5 years of OS and security updates", counted from their release date on the US Google Store. For the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, released on 28 October 2021, that means October 2026: in about a month.

In practice, a phone that no longer receives security updates becomes more exposed to known flaws, especially for Mobile Money payments and banking apps. It keeps working, but it is no longer protected. That is why we recommend the Pixel 6a over the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, and a Pixel 8 or newer if you want very long support.

Pixel 6 Pro XL: it does not exist

There is no "Pixel 6 Pro XL". The large model of this generation is called the Pixel 6 Pro, with a 6.7-inch screen.

This search is frequent. The model that matches what you are looking for is the Pixel 6 Pro. The first "XL" Pixel of the current series is the Pixel 9 Pro XL, available with us: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 256GB. If you see a "Pixel 6 Pro XL" for sale, that listing needs checking.

Pixel 6 or Pixel 6a: what is the difference?

The Pixel 6 has a bigger screen and a 50 MP main camera. The Pixel 6a is more compact, cheaper and supported for longer.

For most uses, the Pixel 6a is more than enough. Its big advantage is its end-of-support date, nine months later.

Colours: white, green, black

The Pixel 6a comes in chalk (white), charcoal (black) and sage (green). The Pixel 6 comes in sorta seafoam, kinda coral and stormy black.

Many customers look for a white or green Pixel 6a: these are the chalk and sage colours. The availability of a specific colour depends on our stock: ask an adviser before you order, by writing here.

In 2026, is a Pixel 6 still a good buy?

The Pixel 6a, yes, for a tight budget. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, no: their updates end in a month.

The Pixel 6 models have good strengths: the Tensor chip, one of the best cameras of their time and a low price. What you give up compared with recent models: length of support (5 years vs 7 years from the Pixel 8), the new artificial intelligence features and, for the Pixel 6a, a 120 Hz screen. If you want a Pixel for several years, read our guide Pixel 8 in Cameroon.

SIM or eSIM: check before you buy

The version you receive may vary depending on its country of origin. Ask your adviser which version is delivered (nano-SIM and eSIM), then check with your network (MTN, Orange or Camtel) that eSIM is available if needed.

Before you buy: three checks

For a phone of this value, check three points: the phone is brand new, its IMEI is clean and the warranty is clear.

  1. Brand new and sealed. A genuine new Pixel arrives in a sealed box. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the points to check.
  2. Clean IMEI. Our guide on checking the IMEI shows how to do it in a few minutes.
  3. Clear warranty. Find our terms on the warranty and returns page and the delivery page.

You then order on WhatsApp, without creating an account. Your adviser replies in under 5 minutes and confirms the colour, the storage and payment by Orange Money or MTN MoMo.
