Pixel 6 vs Pixel 7: the answer in two lines

Choose the Pixel 7. It has a newer chip and it is updated for one more year: until about October 2027, vs October 2026 for the Pixel 6.

In the Pixel 6 vs Pixel 7 choice, the two phones look very alike: the same design family, the same screen size within a few millimetres, the same 50 MP main camera sensor. The real difference is not in the spec sheet, it is in the calendar. The Pixel 6 came out on 28 October 2021: Google supports it for 5 years, so until about October 2026, which is in a month. The Pixel 7 came out on 13 October 2022: it is supported until about October 2027.

A phone that no longer receives security updates keeps working, but it becomes more exposed to known flaws. That is a real issue when you use it for Mobile Money and banking apps.

Spec sheet: Pixel 6 vs Pixel 7

Both have a 90 Hz screen and a 50 MP main sensor. The Pixel 7 gains on the chip and weight; the Pixel 6 keeps a slightly bigger battery.

What the Pixel 7 really changes

It brings the Tensor G2 chip, a better selfie camera and one more year of support. These are not spectacular changes, but they count over time.

  • The chip. The Tensor G2 is the second generation of chip designed by Google. It replaces the Pixel 6's first Tensor. Day to day (social media, video, photos), the difference is felt mostly in the phone's artificial intelligence features.
  • The selfie camera. It goes from 8 MP to 10.8 MP. For video calls and self-portraits, the gap is small, but it exists.
  • Weight. The Pixel 7 is 10 grams lighter (197 g vs 207 g).
  • Support. This is the main argument: one more year of updates.

What the Pixel 6 keeps

A slightly bigger battery, a slightly bigger screen and, if you find one, a lower price.

The Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch screen (6.3 for the Pixel 7) and a 4,614 mAh battery (4,355 mAh). That does not mean it lasts longer: the Pixel 7's more efficient chip partly makes up the difference. If the price of a Pixel 6 is very low, keep in mind that you are buying it with only one month of security updates left. To understand the situation in detail, read our guide Pixel 6 in Cameroon.

Pixel 6 Pro or Pixel 7 Pro

The same 6.7-inch 120 Hz screen. The Pixel 7 Pro has a 5x telephoto (4x on the Pixel 6 Pro) and one more year of support.

The Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 6 Pro are in stock with us. Given its end-of-support date, we do not recommend the Pixel 6 Pro for long-term Mobile Money use.

What about the Pixel 6a?

The Pixel 6a is supported until about July 2027. That is nine months more than the Pixel 6, but three months less than the Pixel 7.

The Pixel 6a came out on 21 July 2022: Google supports it for 5 years, so until July 2027. It has the same Tensor chip as the Pixel 6, a 6.1-inch screen, 6GB of RAM and a 4,410 mAh battery. It weighs 178 g. It is the right choice if you want a small budget and a light Pixel, with acceptable support for a few years.

Our recommendation

For an older Pixel, take the Pixel 7 Pro or the Pixel 6a. To last, take a Pixel 8 or newer.

SIM or eSIM: check before you buy

The version you receive may vary depending on its country of origin. Ask your adviser which version is delivered (nano-SIM and eSIM), then check with your network (MTN, Orange or Camtel) that eSIM is available if needed.

Before you buy: three checks

For a phone of this value, check three points: the phone is brand new, its IMEI is clean and the warranty is clear.

  1. Brand new and sealed. A genuine new Pixel arrives in a sealed box. Our guide on how to buy a phone safely lists the points to check.
  2. Clean IMEI. Our guide on checking the IMEI shows how to do it in a few minutes.
  3. Clear warranty. Find our terms on the warranty and returns page and the delivery page.

You then order on WhatsApp, without creating an account. Your adviser replies in under 5 minutes and confirms the colour, the storage and payment by Orange Money or MTN MoMo.
